New Zealand's Active Investor Plus Visa (AIP) programme is entering an important period of managed-fund oversight, following changes to investment requirements introduced in September 2026.

A legal analysis published on 16 October by Auckland law firm Martelli McKegg has drawn attention to the deployment of international investor capital and the compliance obligations facing approved managed funds.

The developments are relevant to overseas investors considering New Zealand's NZ$5 million Growth category or NZ$10 million Balanced category, particularly those planning to invest through an approved managed fund.

What Has Changed for Active Investor Plus Managed Funds?

New investment requirements took effect on 28 September 2026, strengthening Invest New Zealand's assessment and ongoing oversight of managed funds participating in the AIP programme.

The requirements include greater scrutiny of investment deployment plans, reporting obligations and compliance with the programme's investment criteria.

In its October analysis, Martelli McKegg highlighted earlier figures indicating that:

Five approved managed funds were under active monitoring as at May 2026.

Approximately 34% of NZ$1.89 billion committed to approved managed funds had been deployed at that time.

Existing approved funds face an important compliance review period in November 2026.

These figures were discussed in the law firm's analysis and relate to earlier reporting periods. They are not newly released October Government statistics.

The September requirements also give Invest New Zealand greater scope to respond when funds fail to meet applicable conditions, potentially including suspension or removal from the acceptable investment list.

What Does This Mean for International Investors?

For prospective Active Investor Plus applicants, the key distinction is between immigration eligibility and investment suitability.

An investment appearing on Invest New Zealand's acceptable managed-fund list does not mean that the New Zealand Government guarantees its performance, security or suitability.

Investors should consider several questions with their professional advisers:

Does the fund currently meet the relevant AIP requirements?

What is its investment strategy and deployment timetable?

How is investor capital held before it is invested?

What are the risks, fees, reporting arrangements and liquidity restrictions?

How could a change in the fund's AIP eligibility affect the investor's immigration arrangements?

The answers may differ substantially between funds.

Invest New Zealand's official acceptable managed-fund list was last updated on 12 October 2026.

    Why Investment Coordination Matters

The revised Active Investor Plus programme continues to attract substantial international interest.

Immigration New Zealand's latest statistics, published in October 2026, show 985 applications, with approximately NZ$5.34 billion in committed investment and prospective investment pipeline.

As the programme grows, coordination between immigration advisers, investment professionals, fund managers, banks and other specialists becomes increasingly important.

For international investors, selecting an acceptable investment is only one part of a wider decision involving residence, financial planning, taxation, family circumstances and longer-term objectives.
